The Purpose
The INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM is designed to provide an active method to protect process system equipment from a dust explosion hazard. When explosion venting is used on process equipment the The INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM can be used to prevent explosion propagation from one vessel to another through interconnected piping.

The Problem
In some applications explosion venting or the INTERCEPTORTM-QR® may not be feasible options. Process equipment containing a dust explosion hazard may require an active approach. Chemical suppression offers an active method of detecting and extinguishing deflagrations as they form in process enclosures. Additionally in some process systems there are situations where a deflagration can propagate from the initiating site to connected machinery through interconnected piping. Chemical isolation provides an active means to detect and extinguish flames before they can travel to connected equipment.

Principle of Operation.
The INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM system consists of a Pressure Sensor, the System Monitor, the Explosion Suppression Cannons, and the Power Supply. The Pressure Sensor mounts directly to process enclosures. Each Pressure Sensor contains three individual sensors on different planes. When two of the three pressure switches are activated by a pressure rise from a developing deflagration, the Pressure Sensor sends a signal to the System Monitor activating the INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM Explosion Suppression Cannons. If the INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM is being used for isolation purposes, the Pressure Sensor can be replaced by the Detector Interface Unit, which can be triggered by alternative means such as the INTERCEPTORTM-QR® or explosion relief panels. When the INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM Explosion Suppression Cannons are activated, the suppressant (food grade sodium bicarbonate) is activated and discharged into the process equipment extinguishing the potential deflagration before it results in a dust explosion.

Advantages
The INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM Explosion Suppression Cannons mount directly onto process equipment at almost any angle or orientation. The freedom of cannon orientation allows the INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM to be used on process equipment of any shape or size, including hoppers. A simple angled adaptor allows the suppression cannons to be mounted directly onto pipelines or ductwork. The cannons use low pressure nitrogen as the actuation material so the system can be recharged by qualified plant personal requiring little vendor support. The suppressant agent used in the cannons is food safe sodium bicarbonate. The INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM Explosion Suppression Cannons are available in 5, 10, 20, 40 & 60 lb. capacity for various sized applications. The INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM system features an OSHA lockout system on all suppression cannons. The Pressure Sensor features three individual switches - two need to trigger in order to activate the system. The sensor logic helps prevent false triggers that can occur with process pressure fluctuations. When used as an isolation device the INTERCEPTOR®-CSTM system can be activated by explosion panels, infrared detectors, or the INTERCEPTORTM-QR®.
